First Eye Hospital In India To Be JCI Accreditated

JCI AccreditationSHROFF EYE HOSPITAL HAS BECOME THE FIRST EYE HOSPITAL in India to achieve the JCI- Joint Commission International accreditation. JCI is the gold standard in stringent clinical quality standards. It is the international arm of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), which evaluates quality standards of US hospitals. It is today, the largest organization that accredits of healthcare facilities in the United States and other countries across the globe.

The JCI Accreditation for Shroff Eye is a recognition that the hospital adheres to international standards of clinical care, safe environment, medication safety, respect for patient rights and privacy, international infection control standards and access to dedicated well-trained staff.

JCI Accreditation has gained worldwide attention as an effective quality evaluation and management tool. The JCI accreditation process involves a rigorous on site survey by their team from USA comprising of doctors, nurses and healthcare experts. JCI standards and evaluation methods are developed by healthcare experts from around the world and tested in various countries. They are created to provide a framework for risk reduction and are focused on creating a culture of patient safety. During the survey, the team evaluates whether or not the hospital meets JCI performance standards in a number of areas including patient safety and medical errors, pain management, medical staffing, infection control and hospital management.

JCI assesses the quality of patient care from the time a patient enters a facility to discharge, and utilizes the data to plan and implement changes that create optimal care. The goal is to ensure that treatment protocols are standardized. Every doctor and nurse in the hospital needs to complete certified training in basic life support as part of the qualification requirements of the survey. This accreditation is a major milestone in the development of quality health care in India and is also an important aspect for medical tourism.

Dr Rahul Shroff, CEO and Head-Vitreoretinal Surgery, Shroff Eye said today: “Shroff Eye Hospital is extremely pleased to receive this certification from USA and we hope our achievement will set new standards for eye care in India.”

Dr Anand Shroff, Head- LASIK and Anterior Segment, Shroff Eye said, “We have always placed great emphasis on quality care for our patients. This accreditation is testimony to our high quality code and our determination to provide our patients with the best.”

In a letter dated, 11th April 2006, Maureen Connors Potter, Executive Director of JCI, USA, stated, “Joint Commission International Accreditation has reviewed the Survey Findings for Shroff Eye Hospital. It is with great pleasure that I inform you of the decision to grant accreditation for a period of three years. Congratulations to you, and all the other leaders and staff of Shroff Eye Hospital in achieving this recognition of your commitment to provide quality care on an ongoing basis.”

Ms Potter further stated, “The citizens of India should be proud that Shroff Eye Hospital is focusing on this most challenging goal – to continuously raise quality to higher levels.”

The team who surveyed the hospital also made a special note of an exemplary performance area in Shroff Eye Hospital’s infection control programme.

Shroff Eye Hospital was surveyed on the 15th of February 2006 and received its JCI accreditation on the 11th of April 2006. We are proud to state that this accreditation was granted to us at the very first attempt, making it the first eye hospital in the country to have received this esteemed certification.
